The park later became very famous because of the American naturalist Dian Fossey to carry out her research into the mountain gorillas. She arrived in 1967 and set up the Karisoke Research Centre between Karisimbi and Visoke. Her arrival changed the whole conservation message of the then endangered mountain gorillas, shedding light to the world and how important it was to save the gorillas from extinction. She was murdered by unknown assailants at her home in 1985, a crime often attributed to the poachers she had spent her life fighting against.
She is buried in the park in a grave close to the research center, and amongst the gorillas which became her life. Fossey’s life later was popularized by the Hollywood movie Gorillas in the Mist, sharing her life and passion for the conservation. In April 1994 there were reports of ethnic clashes resulting into mass murder within Rwanda. As this news circulated throughout the world, little or no intervention was done to halt the massive brutal killing. To outsiders the news of the genocide was just simple and based on tribal-based ethnic violence, with the Tutsis the victims and the Hutus as the perpetrators.
There are speculations of how many lost their lives but the actual numbers may never be known however there are just estimations of 500,000 and over a million. The Kigali Genocide Memorial commemorates the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
The remains of over 250,000 people are buried and remembered here. It is a center that talks about forgiveness, pain, remembrance and also a learning tool of how important human life is. The Centre further displays laces where similar atrocities have been committed to give a clear message that it is wrong and should not have happened in the first place and those who seek to know what actually wish to understand the events leading up to the events of 1994.
